Saturday, December 15: Today, I’m dreaming of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa. Many of my colleagues at the university visited the island archipelago over the Eid, while I went to Ethiopia. Zanzibar is particularly fascinating for expats living in Oman, because in 1698, Zanzibar fell under the control of the Sultanate of Oman. Sometime in the early 1800s, Said bin Sultan moved his capital from Muscat, Oman to Stone Town in Zanzibar City. Stone Town, the historical center of Zanzibar City, is a World Heritage site, and is said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa.
Zanzibar is one of the destinations I am considering if we get a holiday between the fall and spring semesters.
I invite anyone to join me by placing a link in the comment section below to your own Daydream Saturday.

It’s not so far from you in South Africa, Sylvia. I don’t know if I can make it there; but if I don’t make it now, who knows when I ever will. Once I leave here, who knows….

Thanks, Amy! I really hope I can make it there and take my own photos, but I’m sure they won’t be as good as these! 🙂

Go! It’s amazing and I’m sure you’ll love it there. I went several times while I lived in Tanzania and it never failed to cheer me up and impress me. Just don’t take the dala dala (pick up truck cum mini bus) from Stone Town to Bwejuu – I have never been so tightly packed in a vehicle – it was impossible to move even an inch and I was in agony for most of the journey. Take a taxi or hire a car; it’s worth the extra money and will give you the freedom to explore more of the island.

I’m sure I would love it Julie! I’ll take your advice about avoiding the bus. My friend Mario went there over the Eid and I think he took a taxi everywhere. Sounds like great advice!

It looks like such an exotic location. We were quite fascinated when we were in Oman to learn about Zanzibar’s connection with Oman considering the distance between the two.
catbirdinoman said:
Yes, it’s interesting to realize how they were so connected in the past. Many Omanis living in Oman today originate from Zanzibar and I’ve heard there are Omanis who make their home in Zanzibar. 🙂

Catbird, just fly me to the South of France. Warm mediterranean sun even this time of year. Or Geneva,… yes,… Geneva, Switzerland at Christmas. Oh my heart still breaks for that place. *sigh*.
