Saturday, September 15:  Today is Six Word Saturday, and here are my six words:

BACK TO WORK ~ BOOTED FROM OFFICE!

I didn’t open my university email even one time in the six weeks I was on vacation for this very reason.  I didn’t want to be upset by anything that had to do with work.  No one wants to find out while they are on vacation that they’ve been sacked, that their house has burned down, that they’ve been demoted, or WHATEVER!!  I didn’t want my peace of mind ruined, or even threatened, during my time of relaxation and leisure.

my new office

I found upon my return that the office I shared with two other people (it was bad enough we didn’t have our own private offices!) has now been confiscated by the university administration (for what use I’m not clear).  I was told upon my return to pack up my stuff and move to a newer building across the campus with a lot of other Foundation Institute teachers into a bullpen area full of cubicles.  It’s not that bad really, but the worst thing is that I’m separated from my closest friends all the way across the campus.

my special new desk

Welcome back to the real world.

listening final is over; marking begins…

Saturday: July 28:  Today is Six Word Saturday, and here are mine:

LISTENING FINAL IS OVER; MARKING BEGINS…

This summer, I have been the coordinator for what is called our Post-Foundation program at the University of Nizwa. These are students who have somehow completed the Foundation Program and are now still taking English courses because their TOEFL score isn’t high enough to start studying in their majors.  My coordinator position was just a summer position, and luckily I can just go back to teaching in the fall.  The only class I did teach this summer was Listening, focused mainly on academic listening and note-taking (including mind maps and linear note-taking).  Having taught the highest level of Speaking and Listening last summer at Northern Virginia Community College, I found this course was an exercise in futility.  My students are at a very basic level, and the lectures were about franchises, solving the traffic dilemma in London, macro- and micro-economics and Gestalt theory.  The curriculum level is simply not matching the abilities of our students.

Anyway, today was the final exam for listening.  This afternoon, our team, and other teachers who were hijacked for the job, began the double marking.  Tomorrow, we have the Grammar Final and on Monday the Reading Final.  We have to double mark nearly 500 exams.  All this by Tuesday afternoon, so as coordinator, I can check over everything for our group before submitting it to the administration on Wednesday.  Thursday morning at 5:40 a.m., I will be on the plane for Washington.  I am so ready for my 6-week break.  One month in Northern Virginia and two weeks in Greece!

As the Arabs say: Al Hamdullilah!

today in the sultanate: ramadan kareem

Six Word Saturday

Saturday, July 21: Today is Six Word Saturday and here are my six words:

TODAY IN THE SULTANATE: RAMADAN KAREEM

Today is the first day of Ramadan in Oman; with the sighting of the moon crescent in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan, those countries announced the advent of the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan yesterday, on Friday.

Religious authorities in several Middle East countries declared Friday as the start of Ramadan, a period devoted to dawn-to-dusk fasting, prayers and good deeds.

Ramadan Kareem is a greeting that means Generous Ramadan because it is a generous time; Muslims get many blessings and see all the things they are to be thankful for. They also give charity during Ramadan.  Another greeting is Ramadan Mubarak, which means basically “Congratulations! It’s Ramadan!”

This will be my first Ramadan in a Muslim country.  I will only be here 12 more days, but Ramadan goes through either August 18 or 19; I assume since it started one day late in Oman, it will last one day longer, but I could be wrong.

This is what I read about what will happen from a long-time expat: Sleep during the day, go out in the evenings. Everything will stay open to the early morning hours.  If you do go out during the day, you will find many shops closed (the smaller type places) but you will also find no traffic and the big malls pretty much empty, but open. Keep in mind you shouldn’t eat or drink in public to and from your car. The city will wake up each evening around 5 or 6 and people will take to the streets in masses for iftar.  Many of the locals will tend to stay up until the wee hours out and about, only to come home in time to pray and go to sleep.

So, although we have a holiday on Monday, for Renaissance Day in Oman, I don’t know what to do. If I go to Muscat, there will be no restaurants open and nowhere to eat or drink.  I can’t drink or eat in public, so I would have to stay hunched down in my car or hidden on some off-the-beaten-path.  Or I could fast myself.  I guess I will spend my time sleeping, since there is nowhere to go and nothing to do.  It should be interesting at least.  Maybe I will try to experience different varieties of iftar: the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during Ramadan; it is usually done in community.  I’ve seen advertisements for iftar dinners in restaurants in Muscat.  Maybe I’ll have to try one!

no fuel, no gas, no water!!

Six Word Saturday

Saturday, July 14:  Today is Six Word Saturday and this about sums up my week:

NO FUEL, NO GAS, NO WATER!!!

It’s said that bad things come in threes and I think this is true for me this week.

#1.  On Sunday, July 8, I was driving home from work when suddenly all the lights on my dashboard lit up and the accelerator didn’t respond to my foot on the pedal.  In fact, my so-far trustworthy GMC Terrain had cut off and I maneuvered it to the side of the road, where it’s death became absolute.  No amount of starting and turning over the engine would get it to catch and go!  I was stranded.  Luckily I was in the middle of Firq and not on the long Muscat-Nizwa highway at some ungodly hour.  After calling some colleagues at work who immediately set out to come rescue me, I had the idea of calling my GMC service man, Mohammed from Bangalore, in Karsha.  He happened to pick up his phone, highly unusual at 3 pm, when most businesses are closed for their afternoon naps, and he zipped right over to where I was stranded in the extreme heat along the side of a busy road.  He called a tow truck who was there in minutes.  I called my colleagues at work and told them to turn back; I was saved.  I am so thankful to Mohammed for this successful rescue attempt.

what good is a car without fuel?

The next day, Mohammed informed me that my fuel pump was broken and I would need to replace it for 155 rials.  That’s $403 USD!! This is NOT money I wanted to spend at all, but especially not right before my 6 week vacation that is fast approaching!! There is never a good time for these things, is there?

So, first NO FUEL, because my fuel pump failed to do its job of pumping the fuel in my tank to my engine.

#2: I went to prepare my roasted vegetable dish for Kathy’s birthday party on Wednesday, July 11, and when I went to light my oven, I found I was out of gas.  No cooking that huge package of vegetables I spent 45+ minutes chopping.  I had to rush them to Kathy’s to cook them in her oven, but as she didn’t know how to operate it, I used Antonio’s oven, waking him up from a deep afternoon slumber.  I’m still waiting for the gas man, Salem, to arrive at my flat to replace my gas canister at this moment.  He originally told me 5:00, insha’allah, but when I called him, he revised to 6:30 insha’allah.  It remains to be seen whether he will come tonight.

And what good is a stove without gas? (Sorry, it’s kinda dirty now b/c it’s due for cleaning tomorrow….)

empty gas canisters

#3. This morning, July 14, my shower had very low water pressure.  In fact it was little more than a trickle.  As I shampooed and soaped myself, I realized with alarm that the stream of water was dwindling.  I hurried and rinsed all the soapy stuff off, only to find the faucet dried up before I got off all the soap. I resorted to a towel rub down.

what good is a shower without water?

Later this afternoon, the university housing guy, Ismail, informed me he could find nothing wrong with my water except possibly some kids turned off the valve on the street.  He turned it back on and watched my water tank fill up. What I have never understood is why on earth the main water valves are on the street, where anyone can mess with them.  And mess with me!!

why would these main water valves be placed on the street where anyone can mess with them????

When I came home, I ran to the gym, worked out, and came back home to find my shower is now working.  Al Hamdullilah…. 🙂

I hope that is all for now…. Isn’t three enough?

Saturday, July 7:  For Six Word Saturday:

LIZARDS ARE TAKING OVER MY FLAT!

one of my many lizards!

At first I thought there was just one, a little tailless fellow who seemed to follow me peaceably from room to room.  But one day I found him dead in the midst of my shoes.  A couple of days later, I saw a skinny long-tailed one that seemed to be everywhere at once.  Then last night I saw a huge one climbing up the wall behind my wardrobe in the bedroom.

All I can hope is that I don’t wake up to find one in bed with me!!  I might not be able to stop myself from screaming!

LETHARGIC INTERNET SEEKS TO SABOTAGE BLOG

My internet connection is so slow, that I often lose patience writing my blog!! Anytime I write a post that is longer than normal and has a lot of photos, it takes FOREVER.  Each photo upload takes an eternity.  Sometimes, I don’t know how much longer I can take it.  I’m losing patience.  This afternoon at 5:00, I started writing about my dhow cruise in Musandam.  I just posted the blog at 9:30!! Four and a half hours????  While waiting, I watched a movie (Me and You and Everyone We Know), a TV show (Brothers & Sisters), and ate my dinner.

As anyone can see by looking at the post, the writing was not what took time. Uploading the photos was excruciatingly sluggish.

Oh well, I’m sure I’ll be back at it tomorrow.  In the meantime, I’m signing off this blasted computer!!

where did the oman border go?

Saturday, June 16: Today is Six Word Saturday and this question sums up my day:

Where did the Oman border go?

We drove up to Musandam this long weekend for the holiday of Leilat al-Meiraj (the Ascension of the Prophet).  Musandam is at the northeastern most tip of the Arabian peninsula and is separated from the rest of Oman by a wide expanse of United Arab Emirates (UAE) territory.  In order to get there, you can either take a plane or a ferry between Muscat and Khasab, OR you can drive, crossing the border from Oman to UAE, and then crossing again from UAE to Oman and into Musandam.  It was no problem on the way there Thursday (well, almost no problem), taking about 1 1/2 hours of driving through UAE on a moderately traveled six-lane highway through salmon-colored sand dunes.

the sign after we FINALLY escaped UAE through the Mezyad border crossing. We needed “peace” because we were at wit’s end!!

On the way back Saturday, however, we were using my friend’s GPS, which led us to miss the bypass road and put us right in the thick of the traffic going into Dubai.  After much backtracking, taking wrong turns, and arguing about the proper way to go, we ended up finally at Al Ain, UAE.  When we got there, we proceeded to the Hilli border crossing, not knowing the roads from that crossing would lead us to Sohar in the north of Oman; once we entered the compound, it seemed there was no escaping.  We were told that to go to Nizwa, we needed to cross at another border, quite some distance away, because the roads from the Hilli border would add 4-5 hours to our drive to Nizwa.   The problem was that once we got into the compound, merging into a three-lane wide line of cars coming from Oman to UAE, we felt like we had entered the Twilight Zone and we might never get out!  It was a long story, the details of which I don’t want to get into here, but after much misdirection and confusion, we finally escaped back into UAE, where we searched long and far afield for the elusive crossing at  Mezyad, which doesn’t seem to have any signs until you get within 5km of the crossing.  Uncountable kilometers out of Al-Ain, we arrived at the border at Mezyad, where we crossed without incident into Oman, headed toward Ibri.   All in all, we spent a total of 6 hours in UAE on various wild goose chases, where we only spent 1 1/2 hours in UAE on the way north!!

Grrrrr…….

colleagues are vacating the university now

Saturday, June 9: Here are my six words for this Saturday:

COLLEAGUES ARE VACATING THE UNIVERSITY NOW

It’s really a downer to be stuck here at the university until August 2, while all my co-workers are taking off for their vacations in droves.  By early July, most of my friends will be gone, and I’ll still have another month to go.  Besides that, I’ll be teaching summer school and as of this point, I have no idea what my hours will be or what I will be teaching.  Between the unknown timetable and subject matter, the heat, and the exodus of my friends, I have no idea how I will survive until August.  People keep reminding me that once they come back, and their vacations are all said and done, I will be leaving for six weeks.

That, thank goodness, is the light at the end of the tunnel.

UNITED STATES EMBASSY: EXTRA PASSPORT PAGES

I visited the U.S. Embassy in Muscat today to get additional pages stitched into my passport. Now I am all set to leave Oman on August 2!! I only had two blank pages left, enough to get me to the U.S. and back, but not to Greece.  So now I’m set to do a lot more traveling over the next year!  Those who know me know this makes me very happy… 🙂

the U.S. Embassy in Muscat

24 extra passport pages to fill up!! 🙂
