wednesday song title interpretation

Wednesday, April 18:  This week’s song title interpretation by Rois for this week is “High.”  “The title of the song means High in Bulgarian. It is one of the most beautiful Bulgarian songs.” Here are some of the lyrics:

High, high, high!
Stand high!
Above the envy and the insult,
above the petty gossips.
High, high, high!
Stand high, so I can see you!
High, high, high!
Today stand high,
above everything.
High, high, high!
And blue-eyed love.
The stars are stars
because they are high.

Here is my interpretation.  Though there are no stars showing in this picture, there certainly must be some at nighttime!! It is one of my favorite views in Jordan: standing at a lookout point in the Dana Nature Reserve.  This is the largest reserve in Jordan, with landscapes ranging from sandstone cliffs to the below-sea-level Wadi Araba.  The view is breathtaking.  It looks like a fantasy landscape, otherworldly… 🙂

wednesday song title interpretation

Wednesday, April 11: Here is my interpretation of Rois’s Wednesday Song Title Interpretation: Freedom (by George Michael).

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don’t belong to you
And you don’t belong to me
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take
Freedom
You’ve gotta give for what you take

Here are some Omani boys doing cartwheels on Al Musanaah beach.  Ah, what wonderful thing it is to be young and free!

wednesday song title interpretation: let it snow

04 Wednesday Apr 2012

Wednesday, April 4: Well, this week’s song title challenge by Rois was a tough one for me because Oman doesn’t get any snow.  My students and I were studying weather terminology today and when I said aloud that I know Oman doesn’t get snow, they corrected me and said, “Teacher, sometimes it snows in the mountains!”  However, when I asked them if they had ever experienced snow, they all shook their heads and said no, they never had.

Since I have no possibility to photograph snow in Oman, I found pictures of my neighborhood in Oakton, Virginia in February 2010.  I was due to leave for Korea when the Washington area was hit by two huge blizzards, postponing my departure.  All the local airports were closed down.  Here are some pictures of that blizzard.

wednesday song title interpretation

Wednesday, March 28: The song title challenge by Rois this week is “Just the Two of Us” by Will Smith.

Just the two of us, we can make it if we try
Just the two of us
Just the two of us, building castles in the sky
Just the two of us, you and I

I’ve featured my sons on my blog many times, especially since they came to Oman to visit in January.  But I haven’t featured my daughter, Sarah, who lives in Richmond, Virginia.  She’s got her own blog: Let me bite that.  Sadly, she hasn’t added anything new to it in over a year, but I hope she does soon!  It’s so nice now that she’s grown up; we can share fun times together… 🙂

wednesday song title interpretation

Wednesday, March 21:  I realized when Rois posted her song title challenge today, “Butterfly” by Crazy Town, that I don’t have one single picture of a butterfly or anything resembling one.

Then I walked into my bedroom in my Nizwa flat and saw a picture I have on my wall.  Here it is:

a butterfly painting over my bed in my Nizwa flat

I love purples and pinks and I love butterflies, so this is my interpretation of the song by Crazy Town:

I see the sun breaking shining through dark clouds
And a vision of you standing out in a crowd.
Come come my lady
You’re my butterfly

Then quite randomly I walked through my hallway and found this picture, which I had totally forgotten about.

butterflies in my Nizwa flat ~ wish they were real!!

And then, VOILA(!), I remembered a short story I wrote a while back while I was taking creative writing classes at Northern Virginia Community College: tortured butterflies.  I won first prize in a creative writing contest for this story, so I got $100!  It’s the only piece of writing I’ve ever been paid for in my life… 🙂

wednesday song title interpretation

Wednesday, March 14: I’ve found yet another fun challenge in the blog world!!  This challenge is created by a lady on a blog called “Rois.”  This creative lady challenges her fellow bloggers with a song title for interpretation each Wednesday.  I know that most of these challenges are for photographers, and though I’d like to consider myself a photographer, I don’t think I have yet developed that artistic “eye” that would make me a true artiste!!  The whole exercise is fun for me nonetheless!  What I do to entertain myself while living in a foreign country… 🙂

Her song title this week is  “Pink” by Aerosmith.  I love the stanza of the song quoted below; as soon as these words came to me, a picture from South Korea jumped to the forefront of my mind.

You could be my flamingo
‘Cause pink, it’s a new kinda lingo
Pink, like a deco umbrella
Ffff, it’s kink that you don’t ever tell her
Yeah, pink, it was love at first sight
Then pink when I turn out the light
Yeah, pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything is going to be alright
No matter what we do tonight

a PINK "love motel" in South Korea

There are motels in Korea known as “love motels.”  Often a love motel has these rubber fringed curtains similar to those found at a car wash; they hang halfway down over the entrance to the motel parking lot.  This is so that people driving by cannot see whose cars are in the parking lots ~ to keep sexual liaisons private.  Often young Koreans come here to be alone, since they often live in their family homes until they marry.  Rooms are also used for extramarital affairs and can even be rented by the hour, or so I’m told.  But they are also cheap places to stay for travelers, and as I traveled often in Korea just to keep my sanity, they were a godsend.  They’re comfortable & clean and they provide shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers, even toothbrushes and toothpaste (used by countless previous customers).  I stayed in them because they were cheap, and they had a cool art deco feel to them.  This one exemplifies the stanza above from “Pink.”  🙂
