Saturday, June 1: This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is The Sign Says.
Signs. Funny, poignant, symbolic, incorrect, informative, foreshadowing…there are so many signs in the world.
Like so many signs translated from another language into English, I can’t help but wonder if this one was done by Google Translator. This sign is at the entrance to the village of Misfat Al Abriyyen in Oman.

Ha ha ha, Google can mess up worse than this sometimes Cathy 😀
catbirdinoman said:
Haha, you are so right, Madhu. I’ve had students turn in papers they’ve written using Google translator and it’s totally mangled gobbledy-gook. 🙂

Perfectly legible1 Ahh – loved it 🙂
catbirdinoman said:
Thanks so much, Meredith! 🙂
Carol said:
So we can’t get into our vehicle and we can’t visit friends who live there?
catbirdinoman said:
Maybe that’s what it means?? 🙂
mrscarmichael said:
I have a fascination for messes, or is that an attraction to, or both?
catbirdinoman said:
Maybe both, mrs. carmichael! 🙂

Funny – someone must have translated very literally the arabic sentence structure. I don’t know anything about Arabic grammar, though….
catbirdinoman said:
The sentence structure in Arabic is very different from English, so using a Google translator just doesn’t work! 🙂
Lucid Gypsy said:
Brilliant and until I can translate English to Arabic I won’t complain! 🙂
catbirdinoman said:
Exactly, Gilly. As an English teacher, I sometimes forget this. Even after studying Arabic for nearly two years in the U.S., and living in an Arab country for 21 months, I can hardly speak a word.

But it’s hilarious!
catbirdinoman said:
Yes, it is! 🙂

I get the message though. And their English is still better than my Arabic! We saw lots of funny translations too.
catbirdinoman said:
Yes, we can get the message. The mangling of English is funny, though, when you see it. And the same here, Carol, their English is definitely better than my Arabic. 🙂

That is funny, even funnier that I understand it……..lol
catbirdinoman said:
Yes, it is even funnier that we can understand it, Russel! What does that say about how our minds work? 🙂
anthropologist said:
Never mind, the message comes through loud and clear: Outsiders, beware!
catbirdinoman said:
You are so right, anthropologist! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. 🙂

P. S. Kudos for looking so relaxed in your profile pic!!! Very nice

It HAS to be Google Translator. No other explanation. 😉

I know, Ruth! I believe it for sure. 🙂

I love finding gems like this one.

Me too, TBM! I’m lucky to have seen it. 🙂

“I don’t know who translated this sign into English” – but it works, I believe, if I would be there with my car, I would not be allowed to drive in there, because I for sure, never would be a resident there …
frizztext said:
– though the comrade translator maybe would understand my German frizzenglish!
catbirdinoman said:
Maybe Frizz, but it’s doubtful. The translator can’t get sentence structure right under any circumstances! 🙂
catbirdinoman said:
I do believe you’re right, Frizz!

Very weird translation, Cathy. 🙂 Thanks for the smiles.
catbirdinoman said:
Yes, it’s a very weird translation. But I guess we can understand it anyway. 🙂

Funny sign, but what an informative post. Your pictures are outstanding. I didn’t know you could click on the tiles and look at a slide show. Thanks for the instructions. it does look hot, but there is much more plant life than I would have thought there would be in that heat. We have very hot summers, and similar landscapes here, without all the ancient ruins, of course. 🙂 Very enjoyable reading! 🙂
catbirdinoman said:
Thanks so much, Marsha. I think you can set up your photo galleries to become a slideshow on your WordPress posts. I’m glad you like the pictures. Some places in Oman are really dry, but some get some irrigation which allows for some plant life. I’m so glad you came to visit. 🙂
tchistorygal said:
I’m glad I visited as well. I’ll look forward to Spain as well! 🙂
