Sunday, May 12: Today is Mother’s Day in the USA, and Jake has given us a challenge to post something in honor of mothers everywhere (Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post: Mother’s Day). He writes: Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May.
Here are some mothers I’ve encountered in my travels.

a mother and her son in Pokhara, Nepal

A mother bathes her child in Bhaktapur, Nepal

a mother and her children at the Lalibela Saturday market in Ethiopia

Indian mothers at the Lotus Temple in Delhi, India

my Korean friend Julie and her two children
And finally, in honor of my mother, who died over 10 years ago: Happy Mother’s Day!

My father and mother and their four children (one was still to come!)
Beautiful images – particularly from Nepal and Ethiopia, very colorful.
Thanks, Annette. 🙂

Ahh Lalibela!
Thanks, Gilly! 🙂
I like the way the first three express some universal feelings – the first woman is so forthright and direct – we need more of that – and the second woman, so tender, the third may be worried, or just tired. And how about that last photo? Mom seems to be the glue holding the group together.
Thanks so much for your insightful comment, as always, Lynn. I think you’re right about those universal feelings of motherhood. I love the Nepalese woman’s obvious pride and self-composure. The third one really gets to me because the mother looks so tired, or worried, like you say. I’m sure the photo reflects the hardship of her life in Ethiopia. Yes, Mom was barely holding the group together. I think the lot of us totally overwhelmed her.
They are all such lovely, interesting photos, but I keep being struck by the vibrant colours in the Saturday market one.
Thanks so much, Elaine. I love the colors in that one too, and how the poor mother looks so stressed and worried. It tells so much about life in Ethiopia.
Happy Mothers Day My Friend ,Thanks for sharing this post I love it 🙂
Thanks, Jake!
I especially love the Ethiopia image, Cathy. Happy Mothers Day!

Lovely and which one is you in the final photo, pray tell?
The tallest (& oldest) skinny one with the bangs, squinting in the sunlight. So attractive!! 🙂

The mothers are all smiling, proud and happy no doubt – lovely pics and thanks for sharing Cathy!
Thanks so much, Marco! 🙂
You’re welcome
Cathy, what a beautiful collection of mothers. And I love, love the photo of your Mother and family – looks a lot like my childhood photos. I lost my Mom 33 years ago today, but I have such fantastic memories – they sustain me. Happy Mother’s Day to you. ~Terri
Thank you so much, Terri. And happy belated Mother’s Day to you too! Yes, I guess most of us have those similar photos of our families, in black and white and in those 50s clothes! 🙂
Lovely pics Cathy. How nice to grow up in such a big family. I often wished I’d had more siblings.
Précioso tu blog! Patterns and Dia de la Madré: Wonderful pics!
