Saturday, March 9: This week WordPress decided to do something different with the Weekly Photo Challenge. They are calling it a Phoneography Challenge because we are supposed to take pictures of our neighborhood WITH OUR PHONES. I don’t have a smart phone, but I do have a new iPad, so I figured I would take the pictures with that. The challenge is this:
To kick this off, grab your phone and head out the door. That’s right — get on your feet and go outside to explore — and document — where you live. I want to see your neighborhood: The path you take for your daily morning run. Your local coffee shop or dive bar. The nearby alley of street and community art. A shot of the intersection that perfectly captures the bustle of your own corner of town. Or a serene landscape view of your village.

I also went out after taking these photos with my iPad and took a few with my Olympus PEN EPL-1.

And finally, this picture I took outside my back door a couple of nights ago as the sun was setting. This one I took with my Olympus camera.

Ok, which do you like better? The ones taken with my iPad or the ones with my camera? I would prefer to use my camera, as the iPad is very cumbersome and awkward. Since I don’t have an iPhone, I cannot take pictures using my phone! I have to say, I’m not really keen on this new challenge, since WordPress is specifying equipment that leaves some of us out of the field of contenders!! 🙂
I agree – I do not have a phone. Too bad – I will still participate using the camera that I do have. I will still enjoy sharing my photos – and looking at what others have to share.
My favourite shot of this collection is the one you took on the two women walking down the street.
Thanks so much, Colline. I’m going to continue to participate too, even if I don’t have a phone! 🙂
Good – because you always have something interesting to contribute.
Thanks, Colline. 🙂

I really like the close up of the milkweed – it’s so pretty.
I’m with you on the issue of specifying the equipment. The theme is good and it’s interesting to see where you live but like you, not everyone has a camera phone.
I’ve got one but I only use it when I haven’t got a better camera with me.
Thanks so much, Julie. And I agree with you wholeheartedly! 🙂
Maybe they should have said, if you don’t have a smartphone, then take pictures with something you don’t usually take pictures with, or sketch…in any case, it’s very interesting to see the neighborhood! The Ipad photos aren’t bad, but I can understand it’s awkward taking pictures with it – cool that you have it though!
Thanks, Lynn. This is the first time I’ve used the iPad since I got it in January, but I hope to take it with me to Spain and Portugal this summer. I never like to take my computer on my travels, so it will be much less cumbersome. Some of the iPad photos were good, but others (that I didn’t post) didn’t turn out well at all!
Wow I love all these pictures Cathy – what an interesting neighborhood! All that sand…and those high walls!
btw I also don’t have an iPhone!
Thanks, Rosie! Glad you liked coming to visit. I won’t be here much longer!!! 🙂

Thanks so much, Amar!
I’m not sure which medium has produced the best photos, but your neighbourhood is fascinating – your photos paint a great picture. 🙂
Thanks so much, Elaine. I personally don’t find it that interesting, but don’t we all feel that way about a place we see day in and day out? 🙂
Lovely pics, Cathy. I’m not in myown neighbourhood at the moment’ Neither of them. I see that wash lines also fascinate you. 🙂
Yes, Sylvia, they’re so colorful and tell so much about the people!! Where are you now, if not in either of your neighborhoods? In transit back to South Africa, I presume?
We’re having a ‘secret’ weekend in London before heading to Mil’s for a week. 😃
Sounds wonderful!! Have a great and top secret time!! 🙂
😄
I agree wtih you. I like the theme but not having to use my phone. I rarely take photos with my phone because it’s a nuisance transferring them to the computer. I’m not even sure that I will bother this week and usually I love the photo challenge. I can’t see a difference between your ipad and camera photos. They are all very interesting. I wonder if your neighbour knows her undies are on the internet!
Yes, I hope WordPress got enough negative comments about this “phoneography challenge” to not bother specifying the equipment from now on! I doubt my neighbor knows her laundry is now out there for the world to see; they’re Omanis and it’s doubtful they read my English blog!
That might be a good thing!
Love the clothes drying in the fresh air, Wonderful photos.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
Thanks so much, Francine!
Great to see where you live, Cath (just for a little while longer).
Camera wins- I wouldn’t have a clue what that milkweed looks like otherwise.
And you know I’m an old fogie who doesn’t have a proper phone.
Me too, Jo! What’s the need for one of those fancy phones when most of us carry our cameras anyway?? 🙂

I prefer the ones you took with your camera, but perhaps I am a bit camera biased? I don’t have an iPad, but when I see people taking photos with them, it just seems a bit awkward.
Thank you so much for visiting and for your comment. I prefer the camera too. The iPad is way too awkward for taking pictures!! And you can’t really zoom, at least I can’t figure out how to do it!
Stand on your head and do a four finger swipe? Ha 🙂 sorry, couldn’t resist it is just that some of Apple’s “shortcuts” seem a bit cumbersome to me 🙂
LOL, you are so right. So many moves to learn, and I just don’t have the patience! Sadly I always skip the instructions on any new gadgets. I really should learn all the ins and outs! 🙂
At the Apple store one time they opened the document that has all the shortcuts for my Mac. I did literally LOL. They didn’t know it of course, but they were talking to someone who has to look up her own cell phone number every single time I give it out. Think I’m shortcut material? not a chance.
Hilarious!! I know exactly what you mean. 🙂
It’s always nice to hear I’m not alone 🙂
Agree 100% 🙂
I prefer the camera shots of course, but I am impressed with the Ipad ones nevertheless! Love the views from your roof Cathy.
Thanks so much, Madhu! I prefer the camera views too. They capture the light better. 🙂

I was more interested in the content than the details of what took them, so I’d say use whatever works best for you. I really enjoyed your photos and a glimpse into your neighborhood and your world! I don’t have an iPhone or iPad, so I just posted photos taken with my camera.
Thanks, Kris. I agree, whatever works best for you! Thanks for visiting and for your comment. 🙂
